50 YEARS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN IN CANADA
Travelling Exhibition organized by Fellows of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada

An exhibition of posters commemorating fifty years of graphic design in Canada.
Designed by twenty Fellows of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada (GDC), the posters illustrate designs that utilize processes ranging from the letter press to digital technology. Fellowship is the highest honour bestowed by the Society and is awarded to a designer who, by influence and/or accomplishment, has made a major contribution to graphic design in Canada.
For over half a century graphic designers have been creating the look of Canadian culture and commerce – from logos on our skates and schoolbooks, to posters at our fairs and sporting events. They have touched it all.
Amongst others, the work of Peter Bartl; David Berman; Carole Charette; David Coates; and Elaine Prodor will be on view in this historic national exhibition.

DESIGN KOOTENAYS
The Best of Visual Communication in the Kootenays

Curated by Peter Bartl

In a partnership with the Selkirk College Digital Arts and New Media Program, Design Kootenays complements the national exhibition, 50 Years of Graphic Design in Canada, with work created by local and regional graphic designers. Through a jury process, printed work created in the Kootenays will be selected by Fellows of the GDC.
Posters, brochures, packaging, trademarks, corporate identity, annual reports, catalogs, and more, will make up this important regional exhibition.
An artist talk will be presented by Peter Bartl(Fellow, GDC) and Jane Merks entitled, A Fine Line: The Difference between Art and Design. This talk will explore the continuing debate on whether there is a difference between art and design, from a Canadian historical perspective.
Matthew Warburton (Fellow, GDC) will also give a lecture on the Business of Design.
