Miscreants – Mischievous and Defiant

Mixed media by Scot Bullick

scotBullick_einviteA visit to an art gallery is meant to be an experience that will inspire, stimulate and sometime challenge the viewer.  The next exhibition opening at the Kootenay Gallery on July 26th will certainly do just that. Miscreants- Mischievous and Defiant is an exhibition of work by Denman Island artist Scot Bullick.  The exhibition includes two dimensional pieces created in paint, crayon, pencil and three dimensional pieces carved in stone, cast in bronze and even felted in wool. But always relating to a common theme: monsters.

Bullick’s miscreants, or monsters, whether modeled and cast, carved, or created from found or discarded materials, move between villianous and friendly, and often times are misunderstood. As Curator, Helen Sebelius states, Bullick presents “a view into a world where social, political and familial tales are retold with varying degrees of despair, criticism and humour”. These are not necessarily all scarey monsters as some are offbeat and project a sense of play. The viewer is challenged to defy the monsters that surround us everyday or maybe even the monster hidden with ourselves.

This powerful exhibition will be showing at the Kootenay Gallery until September 14th. For the duration of this exhibition the Gallery gift shop will be expanded to include the smaller gallery space providing an opportunity to view even more of the wonderful work created by local artists and craftspeople. Now open Tuesday to Saturday from 10-5pm. Visit us on facebook.
