RED
Jewellery by Jewel Envy Studio from Toronto, Ontario

The next exhibition to open at the Kootenay Gallery is the work of Kaslo artist Pat Forsyth entitled Corvidae and Virago. Her graphite drawings were chosen from a prolific collection of work following years of research, experimentation and study.  Forsyth has created a series of stories that reflect her fascination with a female model and four Corvidae birds, crows, magpies, ravens and Stellar’s jays. While at first glance these stories appear haunting, upon further investigation the layers emerge. The drawings set out to honour women with all their strenghths and vulnerabilites. They also reflect the intelligence and almost human-like behaviour of these birds that have inspired the creation of augury, the ancient form of foretelling.

The exhibition opening at the same time in the West Gallery entitled RED is the work of nine artists from a collaborative jewellery studio located in downtown Toronto. Working from the same starting point each jeweller, using a broad range of materials and techniques, created pieces to represent their own unique interpretation of the colour red. It symbolizes luck in China, mourning in Africa, and creativity in parts of India. It is tied to both life and death, as the colour of blood. Red means something different for everyone resulting in a varied and innovative exhibit.

These two exhibitions will run from September 21 to November 3 with the opening reception being held on Friday, September 21 at 7pm.with no admission charge.
