The next concert in the TD Bank Kootenay Gallery Concert Series features local rising stars Natasha Hall, violin and Nina Horvath. This concert will take place at the Kootenay Gallery.
Highlighting the sensitive musicianship of the two young players, the program will include works for violin and piano by composers Debussy, Mozart, Strauss and Williams (Schindler’s List). Joining the duo, locals Nicola Everton, clarinet and Bessie Wapp, narration will round out the program with trio works including Stravinsky’s devilishly saucy musical theatre piece, “The Soldier’s Tale.”
Nelson violinist Natasha Hall is currently based in London, England where she studies with Rodney Friend (former concertmaster of the London and New York Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the BBC Symphony Orchestra). Appearing as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, Natasha has garnered numerous awards and has appeared on CBC TV, “The Nature of Things”, with David Suzuki. With a keen social conscience, Natasha has raised over $25,000 for various charities through benefit performances.
Rossland pianist Nina Horvath is currently based in Vancouver, BC, where she studies collaborative piano with Rena Sharon. She has enjoyed creating many new musical relationships in the Vancouver area as well as in her home region of the West Kootenays. In addition to her academic studies, she has participated in summer festivals in Chautauqua, Bowdoin, Banff, Edmonton, Vancouver and Salzburg, Austria. She has performed on three continents and is in high demand as a collaborative pianist in the Vancouver musical community.

BIOGRAPHIES
Canadian violinist Natasha Hall is currently based in London England where she studies with Rodney Friend (former concertmaster of the London and New York Philharmonic Orchestras as well as the BBC Symphony Orchestra). Her former teachers include Andres Cardenes (Carnegie Mellon University; former concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony), Patinka Kopec (Manhattan School of Music), William van der Sloot (Mount Royal University) and Wendy Herbison. Natasha holds a Certificate in Performance from Carnegie Mellon University.
Natasha has performed as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. She has appeared as soloist with the Selkirk Youth Orchestra, Carnegie Mellon University Baroque Ensemble and the Calgary Civic Symphony as a result of winning the Calgary Concerto Competition. Natasha has received numerous awards for her violin performances and is a winner of the Morningside Music Bridge Chamber Music Competition. She has collaborated in performance with artists such as Rohan de Silva, Andres Cardenes, Kurt Masur, Leonard Slatkin and Alpin Hong and appeared on CBC TV, “The Nature of Things”, with David Suzuki. She has raised over $25,000 for various charities through benefit performances and gratefully acknowledges the generous loan of the Derazey violin she currently plays.
Born in Rossland, Britisth Columbia Nina Horvath began studying the piano at age five. She earned her Teacher’s ARCT before going on to further studies at the University of Victoria, University of Denver and the University of British Columbia. Her studies provided opportunities to explore many new musical paths including singing, collaborative piano and contemporary music. She has always been active as a leader in the musical community helping to establish three new vocal ensembles in Victoria and a student based concert series in Denver.
Nina is currently based in Vancouver, BC where she studies collaborative piano with Rena Sharon. She has enjoyed creating many new musical relationships in the Vancouver area as well as in her home region of the West Kootenays. In addition to her academic studies, she has participated in summer festivals in Chautauqua, Bowdoin, Banff, Edmonton, Vancouver and Salzburg, Austria. When she is not immersed in new musical adventures, Nina is an active alpine skier and educator as a certified ski coach and instructor as well as a semi-competitive ultimate player.
Bessie Wapp is a musician & theatre artist who has created & performed original works throughout North America & in Europe. While based in Vancouver (1984-2006), Bessie was a core member of stilt-dance theatre ensemble Mortal Coil (the tall folks at Nelson’s Streetfest) and Eastern European music ensemble Zeellia. She has performed at Lincoln Centre (New York City), The Kennedy Centre (Washington, DC), & The Croatia Dance Festival (Zagreb). Within BC and Alberta, Bessie has worked with many theatre, puppet, and musical groups. Returning to her hometown of Nelson, Bessie became Co-Artistic Director of Nelson’s Twin Fish Theatre and joined several music groups to pursue her interest in performing across a spectrum of musical and ethnic styles. In 2008 Bessie sang with the Nelson Opera. Bessie currently teaches music & theatre privately and in group settings, through Oxygen Art Centre.
Clarinetist Nicola Everton has recently become a resident of Nelson after spending twenty years as a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Highlights for Nicola during her tenure with the orchestra include participating in the 2008 Grammy and Juno award winning recording with violinist James Ehnes and performing at the Beijing International Music Festival.
Her post secondary music studies began with a full scholarship to Arizona State University and continued for a further four years at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she obtained a Bachelor of Music Degree. Before joining the Vancouver Symphony orchestra in 1989, she spent the winter at the Banff School of Fine Arts. Principal teachers for Nicola include Ronald de Kant and Donald Montanaro.
Chamber music has long a been a passion for Nicola and since moving to the Kootenays, she has taken on the role of artistic director of the Kootenay Gallery concert series, is a founding member of Selkirk Pro-Musica and is the coordinator for the Kootenay Chapter of the Health Arts Society. As a member of the Galena Trio, Nicola enjoys exploring the rich repertoire for clarinet, cello and piano with members Susanne Ruberg-Gordon, piano and cellist Johanne Perron.
Nicola has served on the faculty of the Vancouver Academy of Music and has performed and taught at summer festivals in Sun Valley Idaho, at the University of British Columbia and in the Slocan Valley at the Valhalla School of Fine Arts.
